Facilitating Knowledge-sharing and Networking

SIM Professional Development (SIM PD) continued to facilitate the sharing of management knowledge through our wide-ranging learning events. Close to 11,500 professionals benefited from over 570 seminars and programmes in 2017.

Now into its third year, SIM’s signature event the Singapore Management Festival featured the theme 'Small is the New Big – Courage, Culture, Influence', which focused on the importance of being agile, connected and courageous to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive business environment. Attended by over 800 business executives, the event was helmed by Jamil Qureshi, a top performance-enhancing coach who shared on what drives successful teams. Other keynote presenters included Red Hong Yi, a renowned painter known for her artistic creativity and Jenn Lim, co-founder of Delivering Happiness that advocates the culture of happiness for higher productivity.

The Job of the Chief Executive (JOCETM), completed its 37th run this year. Participants from Asia, comprising C-level and senior executives from a mix of industries and organisations, learnt from the international faculty and one another the latest in management, business insights and best practices. Since its inception, over 1,300 C-suite executives from over 40 countries have attended the JOCETM.

Extending Strategic Partnerships and E-learning

New partnerships were forged to extend our continuing education and training reach and create new potential for growth.

Locally, SIM PD inked a three-year partnership with the Social Service Institute, the training arm of the National Council of Social Services. This will see SIM PD curating and organising the Global Leader Series with a focus on managing leadership and workforce renewal in the non-profit sector.

We also took our experience in management and leadership training beyond Singapore. In July this year, we entered into a three-year agreement with The Kenya Institute of Management to share SIM PD’s training expertise in leadership, governance and management. This partnership subsequently inspired the inaugural Kenya-East Africa Immersion Programme, set for May 2018. The programme aims to build awareness of Africa as an investment destination and develop business leadership in this fast-emerging region.

We also lent our expertise to foreign companies by developing learning solutions tailored to match their human resources needs. Programmes were developed for the Maldives Housing Development Corporation to upgrade employee competencies. Partnering the Centre for Islamic Banking, Finance and Management, SIM PD successfully rolled out the Young Executive Leadership Programme for Autoriti Monetori Brunei Darussalam.

Using technology as an enabler to reach out to more learners anytime and anywhere, we collaborated with technology solution providers on pilot projects to make accessible several of SIM PD programmes through any Internet-connected mobile devices.

Attaining Recognition for Excellence

Our continual effort towards executive training and development has been recognised yet again at the Human Resources magazine’s HR Vendors of the Year 2017 awards. We clinched the Silver award in the Best Management Training Provider category. The awards attracted more than 250 entries across 31 categories and winners were selected by an esteemed panel of senior regional HR professionals in Asia.

Helping Entrepreneurs and Start-ups Get to the Finish Line

As Singapore strives to develop a vibrant entrepreneurship scene, the need for a supportive learning ecosystem for first-time entrepreneurs takes on greater urgency. Platform E was created to fill this gap, not just to nurture start-ups but also the leadership and fortitude of the entrepreneurs behind the start-ups.

Launched in December 2016, Platform E is Singapore’s most comprehensive entrepreneurship ecosystem. Platform E’s two signature programmes interleave proven entrepreneurship frameworks, practice-based learning, deeply engaging mentoring, and on-the-ground fieldwork. For its inaugural batch, Platform E attracted 17 participants for its 12-month IntensE programme and the modular IncubatE programme to help entrepreneurs scale up their businesses.

Ten scholarships were given out to the first cohort, and the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) has also extended its training grant to participants in our programmes.

Platform E’s effort to foster the seeds of entrepreneurship in Singapore has resulted in a number of success stories in its first year. Four new start-ups have been incorporated with one receiving angel funding and Startup SG founder grant from Tri5. They include ATHLEDE, a sports lifestyle wearable start-up; Consult U, a consultancy matching platform that connects businesses with the right advisors; Actualyzed, a community-based, lifespan development multi-ecosystem which focuses on actualizing human potential; and Maddox Technologies, a data management solutions company. In addition, Platform E also successfully helped accelerate two start-ups in the areas of events management and concierge services.

Forging Linkages with Industry Partners

Our strong partnerships with leading industry players have given Platform E participants the opportunity to learn from the best, and gain access to valuable resources to develop their product and business.

In November 2017, Platform E partnered Budding Innovations to launch the Nebula Innovation Programme with the aim to build and develop teams dedicated to Open Innovation, a process that enables organisations to collaborate with external parties such as scientists, engineers and producers to optimise productivity and innovation.

Other collaborations included the setting up of a Makers’ Space with One Maker Group, the market leader in this area, to augment our ecosystem with professional product prototyping and workshop services; to facilitate self-discovery and a strategic career roadmap for participants; and the launch of the Industry Linked Tracks with two local firms, MEDS Technologies and Providence Solutions, to co-sponsor aspiring entrepreneurs to disrupt the urban farming and human resources industries.

In addition, Platform E signed two separate MOUs with RMIT Activator from Melbourne, Australia, and RISE Accelerator from Bangkok, Thailand to strengthen our regional ecosystem.

Creating a Space Where Entrepreneurship Thrives

In August, we opened The Space – a 25,000 square feet co-working space tailored to offer a complete entrepreneurship experience. From collaboration and co-creation rooms to recreational areas and business support facilities, the newly unveiled venue is envisioned as an all-in-one base to help entrepreneurs get their start-up business ready and off the ground. Phase One of The Space saw all 55 co-working desks leased out, with 180 desks in Phase two expected to be completed in early 2018.
